Security

The operation of education institutions are increasingly reliant upon networked computers and Internet connections. Security incidents can be very disruptive and damaging. Most education institutions have been the victim of intrusions and suffered from viruses and spam email messages. These incidents must be resolved promptly as security incidents can cause operational problems, damage reputations or even have legal implications.

JANET-CSIRT is the Computer Security and Incident Response Team provided by JANET (UK) as one many services on the JANET network. The team provides emergency incident response assistance to customers who have suffered a security event. The team also publishes advice and guidance to raise awareness on information system security. See the guidance note to assist system managers who are faced with an intrusion into their computer system. More information can be found in the RSC technical Online Resources page.

Regional Support Centre
It is impossible to totally avoid intrusion, however there are a number of actions that can be taken to reduce the number of incidents and to better respond to those that do occur. The RSC technical team can assist with the adoption of preventive measures such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, web content filtering, anti-virus and network partitioning.

Operationally, the RSC can assist institutions in implementing their systems, providing good practice guidance on system logging, the implementation of central logging servers, patches management and network services monitoring mechanism to get institutions to become more capable and effective in the detection and isolation of an incident.

RSC is running network health check and security check services regionally and giving advice and guidance to institutions in order to improve the reliability and security of their computer networks. Contact RSC technical team to arrange a visit to your institution for further discussion.
