For JANET customers, the JANET Support Manual is the prime document that you should have. It covers most of things you need to know to configure your network services to use the JANET connection. It also includes the JANET policies and procedures for fault reporting and change request.

Security
JANET CSIRT is the Computer Security and Incident Response Team provided by JANET (UK) as one of the JANET services. The team provides emergency incident response assistance to JANET customers who have suffered a security breach. The JANET-CSIRT site contains links that provide guidance on reporting abuse, security advice and threats to networks.
- Viruses and Worms provides guidance to the system manager faced with an intrusion into their computer system.
- Reporting Abuse provides several links with guidance for reporting abuse originated from JANET, email abuse, port/adress range scanning and denial-of-service attacks.
- Security Advice provides the basic information required to maintain the security of a network in today’s hostile Internet environment.

Visit Microsoft’s Security Home page to get the Microsoft products’ latest security information and their security patches. It is important to keep your Microsoft product patches up-to-date. You can find some Windows XP security tips for users and administrators from MIT.
Visit Apple Products security web site and get to the Apple security update from there for your Apple products.
SANS Internet Storm Centre to look at the current security situation from the SANS Internet Storm Centre statistics. There are also many useful network security related articles available in the SANS InfoSee Reading Room.
US-CERT US federally funded research and development centre operated by Carnegie Mellon University, one of the US Department of Homeland Security partnership organisations, for coordination of prevention, protection, and response to cyber attacks across the Internet.
Network
Most JANET customers manage their own DNS service within their network infrastructure and at the same time use the JANET’s Secondary Nameserver service. JANET DNS Service provides information about their offers to the JANET community and the JANET technical guide on DNS gives detailed technical information regarding how to setup and maintain your own DNS services.
If you have implemented Microsoft Active Directory with intergrated Microsoft network services, Microsoft DNS Centre gives useful information on how to design your DNS structure and configure your network components. The knowledge base articles answer most of the questions you will see in Microsoft network infrastructure implementations.

Cisco technical support page provides information about your JANET router. Whichever Cisco router model you are using in you site (e.g. Cisco 2691 or Cisco 2851) you can find product features and technical details.
JANET services page provides information on all services available to the JANET community. You can also contact RSC South East if you need any assistance on applying to these services.
Open Source Software
OSSWatch Open Source Watch provides unbiased advice and guidance about free and open source software for UK further and higher education.
Linux and Linux documentation Projects provide Linux information and documents.
BSD is where you can find information about FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD software and documentation.
Moodle is a widely used open source VLE software which currently supports more than 50 languages in over 90 countries. This software is PHP base courseware running on Linux platform and is very easy to get started with and use.
