RSC South East inaugurates Staff and
Community Islands in Second Life

Opening of the RSC South East Staff & Community Islands in Second Life

"A REAL EVENT IN A VIRTUAL WORLD"

As part of a strategic initiative aimed at supporting providers to explore innovative approaches to learning and teaching in a virtual world, the RSC South East is delighted to announce the formal opening of its Staff and Community Islands in Second Life on the 9th October 2009. You are cordially invited to attend one of four ‘virtual’ tours being held on the day and/or the Grand Opening in the evening (see booking details below). All Tours and the Grand Opening are free of charge.

Second Life is a 3D virtual world in which educators can host a range of learning and teaching activities including: tutorials, presentations, role play, discovery learning, problem solving and exhibitions, to name but a few. These virtual worlds are rapidly growing into an important creative environment for education, learning, business and leisure.

Our Staff and Community Islands will provide valuable pedagogical resources and become a focal point for providers to develop and share best practice. We aim to assist providers to find out more about virtual worlds so that they can make informed decisions towards embedding the technology into the curriculum.

The RSC South East is delighted to announce a collaborative partnership with the Brunel Museum offering providers the opportunity access education materials from one of the UK’s first virtual museums; highly appropriate as Isambard Kingdom Brunel was born in Portsmouth, in our very own SE Region, and is recognised as one of the most famous Britons.

Most UK HEIs have some form of presence in Second Life and there are many education initiatives furthering the virtual world as a viable online learning and teaching platform.

Increasingly, educational organisations are having to find ways to implement savings and demonstrate tangible signs of cost effectiveness. This is now an ideal time for the HE and HE in FE sectors to explore the possibilities of using virtual worlds as a means of blending the learner’s experience. Over the next five years it is expected that virtual worlds in education will show significant growth.
