National Learning Network Materials
What are the NLN Materials?
- Free, interactive, multimedia e-learning resources.
- Small bite-sized chunks of learning, which take about 20-30 minutes to work through.
- Individual sections of topics from a wide range of curriculum areas.
What learning materials are available?
- Materials created during the first three rounds of development offer over 800 hours of flexible, interactive learning spread across a range of curriculum areas.
- A fourth round of development has recently been completed to create a further 110 hours of learning aimed at the adult and community learning sector, but will also be available for colleges.
- See the helpsheet for a list of materials available.
Who can view the materials?
Further Education
All FE staff are entitled to register to view the materials online. Each college will have a number of representatives who have full download rights so that materials can be downloaded locally to a college Intranet or VLE. If you are unsure who to contact within your college or you have been nominated to download the materials and would like to register, please contact the RSC South East team in the first instance.
There is a range of support material available on the NLN materials website aimed at tutors and technical staff. This includes:
- ‘Paving the way’, which provides guidelines covering pedagogy, accessibility (both design and technical requirements), technical standards and quality assurance
- An online Practical Guide to help tutors make the best use of the e-learning materials that are offered free through the National Learning Network programme
- Some Top Tips created by the highly experienced mentor team to provide key suggestions to make the most of the NLN Materials

Specialist Colleges

Specialist colleges now have a dedicated access point to the NLN Materials, known as LearnTrain (http://www.learntrain.net/). Materials can be accessed online or downloaded.
The RSC is able to register you with the site – to do so you must provide us with the following information:
- Institutional username and password of your choice – for cross-college use
- An administrator’s first name and surname of your choice and user name and password
- Your choice of four digit number, which your staff can use if they wish to self-register with the site, for their own login (this gives more functionality than the institutional username).
More information about the LearnTrain system is available at: http://www.learntrain.net/lscfaq/
